"The Siege of the Castle"

Today is Wednesday, & since I usually post a story or something of that nature, (& I didn't feel like writing one today), I scoured my computer for something I could post today.

So, this little excerpt is the answer to a flash fiction prompt that I did in my Senior year writing class. The prompt was to re-write a scene from one of our stories from the perspective of a different character. The scene is from the novel that I am currently in the middle of editing. Maybe one of these days, I'll share that story but for now, here's the siege of the castle from Dale's perspective.

"The Siege of the Castle"

He stared in disbelief at the scene behind him. Dark, ominous smoke rose from the castle. The girls hurried on before him, but something drew him to continue glancing back at the destruction. He knew that his father was there, perhaps fighting for his life, perhaps already lying dead. He fought the tears back, not wanting to cry in front of the girls, but they fell unbidden.
As the siege of the castle continued, he knew it was important that he get as far away as he could. He wanted to live another day. He wanted to live many more days. He wanted to avenge his father’s death. He knew that it was inevitable that his father should die; he was one of the few men that had stayed behind to attempt to stem the oncoming tide of enemies.
He glanced ahead at the girls he was supposed to protect. The oldest looked back at him, tears streaming down her face. Her mother was back there too. He turned again in his saddle to watch the billowing smoke. Who were they to have such noble parents? Parents that would sacrifice themselves so that their children could escape.
Yes, he thought to himself. He wanted to live. He was going to avenge his father, and the girl’s mother. He was going to live, that their sacrifices would not be in vain. He spurred his mount onward, urging the rest of the company to do the same. It was imperative that they reach the safety of the mountain hideout.
Anger at the traitorous nobles and their army swelled within him. It took everything in him to continue moving forward when his soul was begging him to go back. He knew that for the time being he had to accept the hideous facts. His father, the girls’ mother, hundreds of good men and soldiers were dead…and they were alive.
They were alive to fight another day. There would be another battle. Another time, another place. Only that battle would be different. They, the enemy of the country, would not win. He would win. He would crush them, as they were now crushing his father and the rest of the men.
He rode onward, pausing for one last look at the destruction. He sat his horse, silhouetted black against the red orange sky. He spoke three simple words, three words that would remain with him for the rest of his life, driving him. “They will pay.”
With that, he disappeared over the hill, losing sight of the terrible castle onslaught forever.

basketball, volleyball, Egyptian religion, & Canterbury Tales: a normal Tuesday

Just another normal Tuesday at school. Early morning history class, nap until lunch, Bible class, Humanities class, Creative Writing class, basketball practice, dinner, volleyball, & now: writing my outline for my Bible paper that's comparing Egyptian religion to Judaism. Next on the to-do list is reading one of the Canterbury Tales for British Literature tomorrow. Sound exciting?

I didn't get this bottle cap message, but if I had--it would be fulfilled by now.
Actually being busy with so much homework sometimes makes me want to jump off a cliff.
You know, into water that's completely safe so I can swim to safety & do my homework after I dry off.

Tips for surviving homework:

1. Bring sustenance.

Homework is better with food.

2. Play music.

Silence is not golden.

3. Study with friends.

^^ True story.

Lifestyle Forecast: back to civilization

This post will be a combination of the little things in life post & lifestyle forecast because I didn't have internet access all weekend while at Brittany's.

Monday, September 26:

"Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise."
-1 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV)

Tuesday, September 27:

Take a break from media. Turn off your cell phone, put away your laptop, don't turn on the TV. Play a board game, talk, listen to music, socialize with real people.

 Brit & I played Battleship,
 Marvel Monopoly,
& Bop-It. It was so much fun.

Wednesday, September 28:

Still staying away from your phone & laptop, you're allowed to turn on the TV tonight. Start a movie marathon. or watch a new movie you haven't seen yet.

the extended version of Lord of the Rings is always a good movie marathon.
If you haven't seen this movie, you need to. Seriously. It's an awesome movie.

Thursday, September 29:

Learn how to crochet or knit. Make jewelry. Be crafty and artsy. Brit taught me how to crochet this weekend and I started a scarf. It'll probably take me six years to finish it, but hey. It's a start. We also made a lot of jewelry. She has tons of beads and wire and feathers.

my first crocheted thing ever! (yes, it's a little rectangle. I like it)
these are the earrings that I made. except for the feather ones...Brit made those for me because I was hopeless.
the two necklaces that I made.

Lifestyle Forecast: Starbucks, history papers, & Miss Mustang

Monday, September 19:

"You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O Lord, my God, I will give thanks to you forever!"
-Psalm 30:11-12 (ESV)

Tuesday, September 20:

Check out Brittany's photography. She does a lot of cool angles & editing. She has more pictures here. She's an awesome photographer & I'm not even that biased. Before my camera bit the dust, I took pictures of anything & everything. I love photography.

*my own picture: taken somewhere between Redlands, CA & Spokane, WA*

*my own picture: taken in San Francisco at Kara's Cupcakes*

okay, just one more of mine:

Wednesday, September 21:

Do some absolutely craze & weird that normal people would consider the strangest thing they've ever seen. For example:  Miss Mustang . Ree, the woman who writes the blog holds a Miss Mustang pageant every year for her horses. It's hilarious & I love it. You should definitely check out the rest of her website too. She has recipes, photography, & all manner of other things.

This video was the first I saw by him, but then I went on his Youtube channel for more hilarity.

it's the little things in life....Speed Racer & icing

Monday, September 12:

<3 care packages from my family <3 getting boxes in the mail of stuff that I ordered <3 watching Some Kind of Wonderful <3 visiting friends: Becca, Ashley, and Charlie <3

I was watching one of my favorite movies, He's Just Not That Into You, and Gigi, my favorite character in that movie watches Some Kind of Wonderful. It got me intrigued and so when I found it on Amazon for cheap, I bought it. It's now one of my absolute favorite movies ever.

Tuesday, September 13:

<3 tea in the morning <3 wearing one of my new shirts <3 straightening my hair <3 Hairspray <3 hanging out with my roommate <3 icing <3

Brittany has gotten me on a tea kick. Her mom gave me a box of herbal teas for my birthday and I've been having tea almost every morning.
This is another one of my cheap Amazon movie finds! I actually really like this movie, even if it is kind of cheesy. It's a (and I know this is cliche, don't shoot me) heartwarming story set in the 60's just as black rights were starting to make an appearance.
I love icing. I eat it straight out of a can as a snack. It's cheaper than candy and oh, so yummalicious.

Wednesday, September 14:

<3 another new shirt! (okay, see I have this thing where if I get something new, I need to wear it) <3 skinny jeans and boots <3 the shortest British Literature class of my life (25 minutes!!!) <3 Cafe Culture with Danielle, Emily, and Brittany <3

This place is such a cute little coffee shop. The owners are Christians and they offered all the students of Providence 10% off any purchase.

Thursday, September 15:

<3 taking a nap between classes <3 Creative Writing class <3 playing basketball <3 college party with friends <3 dancing <3

this is the restaurant we went to for a friend's birthday.
We all looked smoking! It was a ton of fun!!

Friday, September 16:

<3 chapel <3 Speed Racer <3 having dark hair <3 Hoodwinked <3 Ashley spending the night <3

 <3
This movie is just the best thing ever. "There's an avalanche a-coming and I do not feel prepared!"
